Keksic Flies Again!
Our little friend Keksic is doing really well. He flew for the first time in September but as he still didn’t have all his wing feathers, he didn’t try to fly again all the way until December 2020. At that point, all of his wing feathers had grown and he started practicing flying. At first, he was scared, and he didn’t have a lot of strength, but with each day he was getting stronger and stronger. By March 2021 he became a real acrobat, and we thought he was ready to go and join other parakeets. But Keksic didn’t have the same plan, and he decided to stay.
Keksic is with us all the time, as much as he wishes because he has his own daily rituals. He spends his time always inventing and trying new things, learning and imitating new sounds from other animals and artificial sounds, practicing his human language, and, of course, playing and being mischievous every time opportunity shows. He also decided that, despite our dog, Coco is a very good and loud guardian, he is the one in charge. And yes, he is the one who reacts first when someone from the nearby villages comes up to NGO headquarters, alarming us with a burst of loud noises. We have to be careful because our little Biscuit is also prone to attack people who he doesn’t know or whom he considers suspicious, for reasons only known to him. He’ll fly after them, chase them around trying to bite. So we had quite a few hilarious situations when our friends from the nearby village of Sargento Lores came to our headquarters. By now, the story of Keksic the Guard is known in the whole village and villagers come up just to see Keksic.
Also, since November 2020 villagers started bringing up their friends and family members that come to visit them from different parts of Peru, to marvel at not just Keksic, but also our bull boys, tortoises, and reforestation area. They always have a lot of questions, so we are using this God-given opportunity to educate them about conservation, plants and medicinal plants, animals, and the interconnectedness and interdependence of all life.
